School of Advanced Studies, which opened in 2017 at the University of Tyumen, aims to contribute to the global debate on the most important problems in the area of social sciences and humanities, life sciences and IT and to provide a unique, high-quality education for the best prepared, most talented, and most highly motivated students from Russia and abroad.

SAS research program relies on multidisciplinary research teams integrated into global academic networks; these teams replace traditional disciplinary departments and ensure intensive communication among faculty members within and across disciplines.

Research teams are formed through an innovative faculty search procedure thereby 25-30 finalists get together in Tyumen for a project design session where they self-organize into multidisciplinary teams and propose research projects. Members of the best project teams are then offered full-time faculty positions at SAS. The 2017 search resulted in 3 research teams currently working at SAS.

The next project design session will take place in March, 2018. Plenary meetings, where teams will present their projects for general discussion, will take place on 9,10,11 March and will be broadcast online.

This year’s finalists received their PhDs from the University of Michigan, MIT, National University of Singapore, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, McGill University, Queen’s University of Belfast, Boston University, University of Helsinki, Indiana University Bloomington, Pennsylvania State University, Institut Mines-Télécom and Sorbonne University, Queensland University of Technology, Hanyang University, University of Novi Sad, Johns Hopkins University, University of Cologne, Université catholique de Louvain, Emory University, University of Ghent, SUNY, UC Davis and Durham University. They currently work in research universities in 14 countries.
